June 2012

  • Henley Royal Regatta - Wed 27th June 2012

From Marlow in June to Wargrave in early August, the River Thames offers regattas galore. The premier event is the Henley Royal Regatta, which plays host to both local and international oarsmen and thousands of spectators for five days in June.

Henley Royal Regatta is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and it holds a unique place in the respect and affection of all oarsmen. Founded in 1839, it is famous both as a great sporting occasion and a social event; and people come from all over the world to attend, either as competitors or as spectators. Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower's career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley.

On the middle Saturday in July one can attend the splendid Goring and Streatley Regatta, which includes excellent rowing, a funfair, live entertainment and various country stalls.

The Goring and Streatley Regatta's aim is to get as many crews onto the water who want to compete and crews can enter on their own account, or represent pubs and workplaces. This isn't an ARA event and the event welcomes novice rowers and people who have never rowed before.
